Podcast X: We'll all take a bow (including the cow)

Jonathan's NY Theatre Diary Podcast 10 (9.6 mb)

Recorded in the courtyard between two big buildings between 49th and 50th Streets (and btwn Eighth and Ninth Ave).

That annoying windy noise is not me blowing into the mic but a breeze blowing through.

I talk about the time step, rewrites, readings, theatre rentals, A new Tony category, Disney's new broadway musical, and actors I've worked with.

Yah.

This doesn't really apply to this podcast, but an earlier one. You said I could look on the net for subscriptions to different theatre companies, but I don't really know the names of any of them. Which ones would you recommend?

It really depends on what you're into.

The three big ones that own Broadway Houses are Manhattan Theatre Club, Roundabout, and Lincoln Center. These do pretty mainstream shows that appeal to the widest (and some would say elite) base.

The smaller, but still pretty major, companies are Playwrights Horizons, Second Stage Theatre and MCC. These companies are much smaller, but still attract some pretty name performers and playwrights and oftentimes send a show to Broadway. They're sometimes a bit more daring than the previous companies, but usually still very mainstream.

Then there are other companies like The Public Theatre and New York Theatre workshop that produce shows that have a more urban, more avante garde, and more multi-ethnic sensibility.

And then some really smaller companies that do really amazing work but aren't as expensive as the big ones: Classic Stage and the Pearl Theatre Company.

And then of course, there are the numerous off=off Broadway companies that also do great work.

My suggestion would be to pay attention to the shows that these companies produce, and if it's up your alley, then go for it.

Good luck, and thanks for listening!

Thanks for the info...you didn't need to link to all those sites but I really appreciate it. :)
Also, just wanted to say thanks for mentioning Spamalot in this podcast. (The third name you're looking for is David Hyde Pierce.) You saw it before it opened? So jealous. ;) I guess you saw the cow and the witch scene then? And possibly a song called Soggy Old Blondes? Either way, that's awesome. I have the soundtrack, but now some of the material in the show has been changed so it's different...grrr.
